MTAC MARIN BRANCH NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings!,

Our Board voted to increase student recital fees from $5.00 to $8.00 and the Margaret B. Davis Competition fee by $5.00 in each division.

The General Meeting/Potluck Party was fun. Special thanks to Amy Martin from the State Board for joining us and Carol La Russo for graciously hosting.

News about Certificate of Merit (CM)
Teachers are required to download and sign a contract to enter their students in CM. This signed contract must be submitted along with their students’ registrations and entry fees by Nov. 15th. Helen Konowitz is our CM Chair and will keep you posted via emails. All CM FORMS AND CM ENTRY FEE CHECKS go to Helen. Most of this process is done online however you will still need to pick up your individual packets at he Magic Flute Store, located in the Northgate Shopping Center.

Directory is out!
Our new Directory is out! Kudos to Marie Carbone and Christina Bradley for all their work. They really extended themselves to include everyone, when at the last moment before going to press, a huricane disrupted some email carriers. They managed to include all changes! The special calendar produced by Christina will be available at the Magic Flute. Pick up your copy when you visit the store and this will help us save postage.

Student Recital Oct. 26th
Sandra Simich chairs the student recital in the Marin Lutheran Church, at 649 Meadowsweet Drive, Corte Madera, on Oct. 26th at 2 P.M. Note that the entry deadline is ten days prior on October 17th. CERTIFICATE OF MERIT NEWS

By now I’m sure you’re all busily registering students both new and old for this year’s program.

Please be sure to print out and read, slowly and carefully, the revised CM Policy. Look through all the boxes on the CM – Forms and Information window at www.mtac.org. Explore the CM Newsletters, look up things in the CM Encyclopedia, and remember to PRINT the 2 addenda to the piano syllabus and then add the information to your copy.

Please remember, DO NOT DELETE students, even if they are not participating this year! Be sure to choose “Re-Enroll” for any student who has ever participated – not just last year.

Following these procedures allows us to keep track of high school students for various eligibilities and also permits the transfer of students between teachers and/or branches. CM Chair Helen Konowitz: 415 - 456 - 2132 helenkonow@aol.com

Mail your ENTRY FORM and a check made out to MTAC Marin Branch for your Studio’s total tally to SANDRA. Each teacher has ten minutes per program. Time exemptions are made for students required to play in a Student Recital to qualify to enter the Margret Bean Davis Competition or the Teen Recital.

To enter your students you can download a form from our Branch’s website www.mtacmarin.org. Click on “BRANCH ACTIVITIES” printed in white letters in the blue Header Section at the top of the home page. Then click on “Student Entry Form”. You can then print one or more copies.

The Board of Directors raised the entry fee to $8.00. In case a member uses the prior entry form, they can bring a check to the recital to make up the difference in the amount due. Sandra must receive fees prior to the start of the recital. A new recital template is available on-line: Christina Bradley has created an on-line down-loadable template for the Student Recitals. This recital program guide is optional for Chairs to use, yet highly recommended. Although admission to our Student Recitals is free, donations to defray our cost are always welcome. What Costs? We do have to rent churches, tune pianos, print programs and comply with extra insurance requests. Since this recital is close to Halloween, the wearing of costumes by the performers will be encouraged. Let’s make this a fun experience for everyone!

Re: Concerto Movement Competition for Bay Are Youth

The Palo Alto Philharmonic is sponsoring a Concerto Movement Competition open to school-aged students, both instrumental and vocalists. The purpose of the competition is to recognize outstanding talent and provide an invaluable learning and performing experience.

The J.W. and H.M Goodman Family Charitable Foundation underwrite the competition, with additional support from the City of Palo Alto. Applicants must be from the greater Bay Area who are 18 years of age or younger who have not yet graduated from high school as of December 31, 2008.

Each applicant should submit a recording of a movement from a concerto or concert piece for soloist and orchestra, with duration of five to fifteen minutes. The finalists selected from the recordings will then perform before a panel of Judges in Palo Alto on February 28, 2009.

The judges will select as many as seven winners, all whom will have the privilege of performing accompanied by the Palo Alto Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert on Sunday afternoon May 17, 2009 at the Cubberley Theatre in Palo Alto. Applicants, along with a demo CD and a non-refundable fee of $25 must be received by December 31, 2008.

We encourage all interested musicians to enter the preliminary audition. Application forms and additional information about the competition can be obtained from the Palo Alto Philharmonic Association at (408) 395-2911 or by visiting the website at www.paphil.org
